Excelling in your assessment centre

15 Mar 2022

The assessment centre part of the recruitment process is typically one of the toughest, with many applicants finding it the most challenging part. We’re going to look at some tips and advice on assessment centres, including how to deal with them, what employers are looking for in potential candidates and how best to show your commercial awareness.

So, what is an assessment centre?

They are regularly used within recruitment for a graduate scheme. The main aim of an assessment centre is for employers to review applicants in terms of role suitability, giving candidates an opportunity to show off their fundamental skills. Rather than a regular interview, either a one-on-one or with a panel, an assessment centre utilises various activities to make comparisons between a group of applicants. These activities may include presentations or simulated scenarios.

What will an assessment centre entail?

Here are a handful of possible activities that may take place during an assessment centre:

Interviews. This may not be the case in every assessment centre, but candidates should be prepared.
Presentations. This could depend on the graduate scheme/job you’re applying for, but employers will tend to focus on your communication and analytical skills.
Tests. Candidates may have to take several tests at an assessment centre, which could include psychometric evaluations and case studies.
Social and/or networking. This may include a lunch or dinner event. It’s important here to have smart questions prepared and make sure you get to know people.

How to prepare

Naturally, assessment centres can be intimidating, but by being prepared, confident and understanding of what prospective employers are looking for, you’re on the right track. Bearing in mind you’ll be measured against other applications during the centre, it’s crucial you appear in control and don’t panic! Try to banish any negative thoughts, focus on what you’re doing and acing what the recruiters want.
